Attention! Helmets will be mandatory for bicyclists in Japan from April 1st!
The Japanese media is reporting that with the revision of the Road Traffic Law, the rules for riding bicycles will change significantly from April 1st, with all bicyclists required to “wear a helmet“.
Until now, children under the age of 13 were required to wear bicycle helmets. However, under the revised Road Traffic Law, which came into effect on April 1st, the wearing of helmets will be extended to all cyclists, regardless of age.
According to the amendment to Japan’s Road Traffic Law, wearing a helmet will become a “duty of effort” from the 1st. This duty of diligence is different from an “obligation” in that there is no penalty for violating the rule, but effort must be made to comply with it.
